St. Joseph’s RCVA Primary School is a Schools Games Gold Award School. This shows that sport in our school is highly valued. All children have two hours each week of PE and we take part in a range of festivals, competitions and events throughout the year. We aim to always offer a sports after school club and children are encouraged to be active throughout the school day in Breakfast Club, during Early Birds and at break times and lunchtimes.

We work with the Sunderland Football foundation, Brian Honour – our Football Coach, Keep Actice and a range of other professional coaches to enhance the sporting experiences for children in our school.

Children were given the opportunity to complete a course to become a sports/playground leader. They had to complete many activities and use many skills to complete the course.

Cain and Grace
Grace says ‘Our job is to ensure equipment is used safely. We also organise events and set up games to make sure everyone is active and having fun. I am determined to make our school happy and active.’
Cain says ‘Being a Sports Leader is setting out fun, safe games for everyone to enjoy. Being involved in games over break and lunchtime helps people to respect one another and work as part of a team’.

Athletics Competition
This term we took part in the year 4 Athletics festival. Our team was made up of 4 boys and 4 girls. We enjoyed doing the athletics competition even though we didn’t win. It was really fun and we enjoyed participating. Katey came first in the 60 meter running race and went into the finals. Lillie did the 600 meter running race and she ran really well and continued to try until the very end. Kayla did the javelin event and nearly won and Sophie did the jumping event and came fifth. Gary came 3rd in the jumping event and Ashton came 8th in the 600 meter run. Kieran also came 1st in the 60 meter sprint and Connor took part in the javelin and tried really hard. We all felt really proud of ourselves for taking part. We would really like to go again.

Canon Gaughan Cup
St. Joseph’s recently hosted the annual Canon Gaughan Cup. Children from years 4,5 and 6 participated in the tournament finishing third. Thanks to all who attended and offered support.
