Rights Respecting School

As a Gold Rights Respecting School we aim to provide a happy, friendly and caring atmosphere in which children feel secure and valued, in a warm, safe Christian environment.

We have a focus group which is made up of children from each year group and Mrs. Readman. This group meets on a regular basis to discuss how the school is focusing on children’s Rights and if there are any action points which need to be addressed. If any issues arise, the group discuss what steps to take next.  Our school is split into 4 rights groups.

The groups are formed from a mixture of children from each year group ensuring that children from different ages can work together. We meet each week and carry out focused work on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and how we respect these rights.

As part of rights groups the children suggested that they would like to see a Rights Respecting page on the website to promote awareness to the wider community.

The children decided they wanted a Rights Respecting Mascot to further promote Rights in our school.

Rights Respecting Mascot

We held a competition for children and their families to design a Rights Respecting Mascot for our school. Our winning entry was designed by Anya and Kieran Willis. This is on display throughout our school. His name is Raindrop.

This is what he represents:

• The head is a football which represents the right to play.
• The mouth is a banana which is the right to nutritious food.
• The light bulb represents the right to share ideas.
• The body is a drop of water, representing the right to clean water.
• The homework book represents the right to an education.
• The microphone is the right to be listened to.
• The feet are houses which represents the right to shelter.
• The belt represents the right to clothes.
• His big ears represent the right to be listened to.

Rights Respecting Information & Events

We have a ‘Rights Respecting Ambassador Award‘ which is awarded each week.  Recipients are nominated either by their peers or any member of staff for displaying the values and attitudes of a Rights Respecting champion!  Please visit the UNICEF website.

Right’s Groups

During Rights Groups Class 4 children did an activity called the Equality Walk which was about the right to an education. They played the rolls of different children around the world and talked about how they felt if they received or didn’t receive their right to an education.

Den Day

To support UNICEF’s Save The Children Den Day our school have been building dens with their rights group to raise awareness to change children’s lives. Have a look at our pictures. We had a fabulous day!

World Book Day

Children from all classes celebrated World Book Day. They all dressed up as their favourite book character and shared books with each other. Puss in Boots, Mrs Close, came from our local library to read the children some poetry.

Dementia Friends

Our school is dementia friendly and as part of our awareness junior children attended a dementia friendly awareness launch event in the Community Centre Blackhall. The children opened the event by singing and then they listened to various speakers raising awareness on dementia. They were then asked questions about how they felt safe in their community and how they could help to provide the same safety to people in our community who experience dementia.

Attendance Assembly

Children from class 4 lead our Attendance Assembly and talked about the importance of attending school. Their information was shared with all classes and parents.

Rainbow Garden

Children picked fruit from our garden and all children had the opportunity to taste the juicy apples and plums.

Den Day

Community

During Harvest our parents and carers send in food items that we package up to deliver to the older generation in our community. Every year we are pleased to see how generous our families are and the food parcels are very much appreciated by the elderly neighbours.

Following our Christmas Dinner in December this year, our Lead Ambassadors and Mrs Cockburn visited the Aged Miner’s Homes to offer a meal to our. We receive neighbours. This small gesture was very gratefully received and we had some lovely thank you notes saying how wonderful their meal was.

Local History Group 

Class 4 were invited to Blackhall Primary School to meet with the local history group and learn about Remembrance Day. The history group gave a talk on World War 1 and had many artefacts for the children to learn about. They were given the opportunity to ask questions to further their knowledge.

Cannon Gaughan Cup

Our school football team took part in the Cannon Gaughan Cup and played fantastically. All children showed good sportmanship and excellent teamwork.

Family Groups

In family groups we have been looking at new ways to promote awareness of the UNCRC and we decided that we would target the wider community as well as our parents and families. To do this we have made posters on our rights. One of our Y2 children decided it would be a good idea to advertise these by putting them on our website and on our Facebook page. We hope they help you to understand your rights.

Enterprise Day

Children throughout our school worked together as teams to make their product, paper boats, which they sold to the banker. The team with the most money won! All team members had very important jobs. The difficult part was when the manager had to decide who had to be fired, with the help of his/her deputies!!
