Curriculum Intent: Languages
In response to our mixed-aged classes, our curriculum is implemented on a two-yearly programme (Cycle A and Cycle B). This ensures complete curriculum coverage for our pupils. As children progress throughout the school, they develop their knowledge and skills through a range of topics. By Year 6, all children will have followed our Curriculum Narrative pathway.

Implementation
Languages are an integral part of the curriculum. Learning a language is ‘a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures.’ It helps to equip pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. It encourages pupils to appreciate and celebrate difference. The languages curriculum should also provide the foundation for learning further languages. It should enable pupils to study and work in other countries. Department for Education
Our pupils should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following threshold concepts:
- Vocabulary and Opinions
- Manipulating Grammar
- Spelling and Grammar
These threshold concepts underpin learning in each milestone. This enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.
At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we will use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our lessons. Children will have the opportunity to support their work with a variety of resources. We will aim for a balance of whole class, group and independent learning. Wherever possible we encourage children to use and apply their learning in other areas of the curriculum; ICT, PE and Music, for example, are particularly appropriate for cross-curricular teaching.
Aspirations For The Future
Pupils develop an understanding of how subjects and specific skills are linked to future jobs.
Here are some of the jobs you could aspire to do in the future as a Linguist:

Assessment
Through the explicit teaching of the speaking, listening and writing skills included within Modern Foreign Languages, both the teachers and the pupils assess their learning continuously throughout the lesson. At the end of the unit, pupils are given the opportunity to reflect on their knowledge and understanding. Our assessment systems enable teachers to make informed judgements about the depth of their learning and the progress they have made over time.
