Characteristics of a Mathematician
- An understanding of the important concepts and an ability to make connections within mathematics.
- A broad range of skills in using and applying mathematics.
- Fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system.
- The ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts, including the new or unusual.
- The ability to think independently and to persevere when faced with challenges, showing a confidence of success.

- The ability to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions.
- Fluency in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques.

Implementation
Teachers follow the White Rose Schemes of Learning to ensure consistent coverage, following a 2 part lesson to provide children with the opportunity to build a deep conceptual understanding of maths before applying their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving. Those who are not sufficiently fluent are given more time to practice and consolidate their understanding before moving on.
Other resources including Numbots, NRICH and NCETM are used to engage the children in mathematics.
Our pupils organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following key concepts:
- Know and use numbers
- Add and subtract
- Multiply and divide
- Use fractions
- Understand the properties of shapes
- Describe position, direction and movement
- Use measures
- Use statistics
- Use algebra
These key concepts underpin learning in each milestone. This enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.

Vocabulary
It is important for children to use correct mathematical vocabulary and have a good understanding of what these terms mean.

Assessment
Through the explicit teaching of the Mathematical skills, both the teachers and the pupils assess their learning continuously throughout the lesson. Questioning is used to assess pupils understanding and timely feedback to provide intervention and address misconceptions to ensure that all children are making progress. Summative assessments are used to monitor children’s progress.
