Local Author
All children had a visit to Blackhall library to listen to and be inspired by a local author.
Number work
Reception children have enjoyed identifying numbers 0 to 10.
Aspirations
Take a look at what some of the children aspire to be when they get older.
Place Value
Children in class 2 have been learning about place value and completing lots of practical work using counters, cubes and base ten.
Festival Day
On Festival Day our whole school went to Wingate Primary School where we all had a fun day playing and interacting with children from other schools in our partnership. Children came together to sing our festival song.
Junior Prince William Awards
Children from year 5 have been attending Wingate Primary School every Tuesday morning to complete tasks such as map reading first aid, bush craft, team building skills and playmaker. They then attended an awards assembly where they were awarded certificates for their achievements.
Den Day
To support the UNCRC’s Save the Children, rights groups worked together to build their own dens to raise awareness of those who don’t have shelter. It was a fabulous day and everyone had fun! Take a look at our gallery.
Spanish lesson
Children from year 5 had the fabulous opportunity to take part in a Spanish lesson at St Bede’s School. They also made sentences using shapes and colours.
Year 2 Challenge Day
Year 2 children had a special challenge day after their hard work completing SAT’s. It was a fun day and they all enjoyed themselves.
Dementia Coffee Afternoon
Our coffee afternoon was a great success and very well attended. A huge thank you to all who baked and bought cakes for this very worthy cause. Over £200 was raised for Dementia.
Year 6 SAT’s
Well done to our year 6 children for all of their hard work and dedication while preparing and completing their SAT’s.
They all enjoyed some relaxing time after the tests were over. On Friday they went to Infinity Air and had a fun-filled day.
Art
Children in class 3 have been using the technique of printing using different colours to create images of animals.
Easter Craft
As part of our Easter preparation children worked together to decorate eggs. The eggs were then judged and a prize awarded to each year group.
Bishop Robert Byrne
Children from St. Mary the Virgin council were very lucky to meet our new Bishop, Robert Byrne at a special welcoming mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle. It was a wonderful Mass which was attended by children from all of the schools in the Diocese. After the service the children were able to have their photographs taken with the Bishop.
Once again the children supported World Down Syndrome Day and wore lots of different socks. Here are some pictures of the children wearing the socks.
Skipping Festival
Children worked very hard this year for their performance at the skipping Festival and it finally paid off. They came FIRST! Well done to all who took part and for all of their hard work. Many of the children also won individual and group bronze, silver and gold awards. Well done!!
World Book Day
Children from all classes celebrated World Book Day. They all dressed up as their favourite book character and shared books with each other. Puss in Boots, Mrs Close, came from our local library to read the children some poetry.
Attendance Assembly
Children from class 2 lead our assembly today and talked about the importance of being in school. This was “well attended” by parents and carers.
Forest school
As part of forest school activities, our 2 year olds have been reading the wonderful book “Stick Man” by Julia Robertson. This then inspired them to look for sticks and make their own stick men.
Dementia Friends
Our school is dementia friendly and as part of our awareness junior children attended a dementia friendly awareness launch event in the Community Centre Blackhall. The children opened the event by singing and then they listened to various speakers raising awareness on dementia. They were then asked questions about how they felt safe in their community and how they could help to provide the same safety to people in our community who experience dementia.
Asia Week
Each class looked at a different country and learned all about it. We then had an assembly and presented each country so that the whole school knew facts about India, China, Japan and Thailand.
Science
Children from year 5 have been going to Dene Community school and have been learning lots of fun things about science. “I’ve learned a lot and it is fun. I loved the experiments we did on finding out the acid, alkaline and neutral content od substances” said Grace.
Spanish
Children from year 4 had a fabulous Spanish lesson at St Bede’s Comprehensive School. They learned how to say their name, colours, animals and how to construct a sentence in Spanish.
Class 3 Science
Class 3’s science topic is rocks. The children were really excited when they got the opportunity to explore a variety of rocks. They created their own descriptions and compared each of the rocks. We used the work to create a display in the classroom.
Science Ambassadors
Children from year 3 and 4 have been trained through Durham University as Science Ambassadors. Children took part in lots of practical science activities and presented their findings to the group. The children are looking forward to developing their role as Science Ambassadors in school.
Stem Event
Children from Class 4 attended a Stem event at Durham University where they were challenged with their computer abilities.
Christmas Events
During Advent we have been preparing. Our activities include a Carol Service, Nativity, visits from Santa Clause and Christmas dinner.
Junior Prince William Awards
Year 5 children have been completing their Junior Prince William Award where they have been learning lots of skills such as: first aid, navigation, bush craft, team work and remembrance.
Ben and Jet
Ben and Jet visited the children in class 4 as part of their talks on safety by the police.
Anti-bullying
During anti-bullying week children from year 6 attended a workshop and experienced the reality of cyber-bullying.
Remembrance
Children delivered a very heart-warming assembly to parents and carers to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 1st World War. There wasn’t a dry eye in the hall when they sang ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning.’
Cookery Club
The children have been learning how to make their own jam sandwiches.
European Week
During European Week class 2 and Reception children have been learning about France and Spain. Their activities included: playing the castanets, singing French songs, self portraits – Picasso style and much more.
Dinosaurs
The 2 year olds have been learning about Dinosaurs. We have coloured Dinosaur pictures, made a giant Dinosaur collage, painted our own Dinosaurs, sorted Dinosaurs by colour and moved liked Dinosaurs outside!
Rainbow Garden
Children picked apples and pears from the garden and children from each class enjoyed them.
Beamish Visit
KS 2 children visited Beamish and learned lots about life down the mines and in mining villages. It was a very hot day and and the children had a fabulous time.
First Holy Communion
Children from year 4 made their First Holy Communion in June. This was a very important time in their lives. Thank you to all who came along and offered their prayerful support.
Sleepover
Children enjoyed the sleepover and slept well ALL night! The staff however, were awake MOST of the night!!
A fabulous time was had by all.
Soccer Aid
Sports leaders organised an event in support of Soccer Aid and children throughout the school took part in lots of activities to support this worthy cause. Here are a few photographs of the children enjoying themselves.
Royal Wedding Celebrations
Children across the whole school have been preparing for the celebration of the wedding of Harry and Meghan.

Early Years
Children enjoyed investigating all areas in Early Years.
Observational Art
Children from class 4 went into the garden and completed some observational drawing.
Preparing for Easter
As part of our Easter preperations the children lead and performed the Stations of the Cross and were joined by parents and grandparents. Afterwards we judged the Easter Egg competition and awarded prizes.
Easter Egg Decorating
Parents/Carers came into school to help children decorate their Easter Eggs for a fun-filled craft morning.
Moorehouse 2018
Children from year 3 and 4 went to Moorehouse for an over-night stay and enjoyed lots of activities. Here are some pictures of their stay.
World Book Day
Children came to school dressed in their favourite book character to celebrate World Book Day.
Wellfield Challenge Day
Year 5 children attended a challenge day at Wellfield School. Their activities included Maths and Geography.
Youth Friday
Sophie and Olivia attended this year’s Youth Friday gathering at St Mary’s Cathedral at Newcastle. This is a celebration of how fabulous our young people are and was attended by Primary Schools throughout the Diocese and Bishop Seamus.
Asia Week
During Asia week Class 3 were looking at Indian art and applying techniques to their own art including Mehndi and rangoli patterns. Here are a few examples of their work.
Let’s go fly a kite
The children from class 1 took advantage of the windy weather and had fun!
Science
Class 3 have been looking at the states of matter of chocolate and we observed the changes.
All About Mountains
Class 4 children have been working in groups researching mountains and have presented their work to each other so that they gain a wider knowledge of mountains.

Children from Class 2 went to Wingate Infant School to take part in a fun day of science.
