Children were very respectful and prayerful as we joined in unity with our federated school Our Lady of Lourdes, Shotton, in our day for peace. Watch this space for some beautiful work produced today.

Safer Internet Day 2022
On Tuesday 8th February we will be joining schools and youth organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2022. Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers and more, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote at St. Joseph’s and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year. Some of the activities we’ll be participating in can be found on our website.
We would be delighted if you could join us in celebrating the day by continuing the conversation
at home. To help you with this, you may be interested in downloading the free Safer Internet Day Education Pack for Parents and Carers which is available at: saferinternet.org.uk/sid-parents.
There are top tips, quizzes and films which you can use at home with your child.
Some other resources which you may find helpful in supporting your child online are:
- Tips, advice and guides for parents and carers from the UK Safer Internet Centre (saferinternet.org.uk/parents)
- Advice for parents and carers from Childnet (com/parents-and-carers)
- Reviews and information about games, apps, TV shows and websites from Common Sense Media (commonsense.org)
- Help on using parental controls and privacy settings from Internet Matters (internetmatters.org./controls)
Online safety is an important issue which as a school we’re committed to teaching our children about.
If you have any concerns or questions about keeping your child safe online, please do get in touch.
Ready for the challenge of a teaching career?
We want to keep you informed of any opportunities which may be of interest to you, your family, friends and colleagues. Please read the letter to find out more about Primary and Secondary Teacher Training Programmes commencing in September 2022.
Advent
Today, 28th November 2021, marks the First Sunday of Advent. Today the first purple candle was lit on the Advent Wreath at Mass. Below you will find an online Advent Calendar from Cafod, which has many useful links. There is also a link to some Advent resources that you can use at home as a family. We hope that you find these resources useful as we journey together towards Christmas.

Anti-Bullying Week
During Anti-Bullying week, Children were led in a liturgical prayer by Class 1 where they listened to the importance of being kind and helpful towards others. Children took part in various different activities and all thought of one kind word to describe one another.
Remembrance Day 2021
To mark Remembrance Day 2021 we have taken part in lots of lessons and activities. We watched a film called ‘We will Remember them’ about how and why we remember some of the soldiers from our local regiment, the Durham Light Infantry, who fought in conflicts through history but did not return home.
The children looked at a selection of primary and secondary sources and used them to find out about local soldiers.
We gathered together for liturgical prayer, beautifully led by Class 4.
Class 1
We looked at pictures of the Cenotaph in London and used it as inspiration for our own.
Using a variety of different media we made poppies.
Class 2
After looking at the resources it inspired the children to create pieces of artwork and poems to say thank you to the soldiers who fought for our freedom. They even got to try on some of the kit that the Royal Navy wear today.
Class 3
Year 3 and 4 used the evidence they were given to find out about each of the different soldiers.
Class 4
Georgia O’Keeffe was an artist known for her paintings of enlarged flowers. Class 4 used this as an inspiration for their own piece of art work.
“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”
Online Safety
Children in year 5&6 have worked with Paul from Clennell Education Solutions to learn more about ways to stay safe online. Children were fantastic in discussing the potential risks and identifying ways to reduce these risks.
Please follow this link from Clennell to a video for more information.
You can also read our Apps for Children Parent leaflet to find out more information on suitability of apps and tips for supporting your children to use technology safely.
